Fall back--and move forward!
Warm days, cool nights, sports, vibrant colors, long walks, and my personal favorite, Halloween...fall has everything!
Despite what these unseasonably warm days--and packed schedules--may tell us, autumn is the season to start slowing down, getting into our routines, and letting go of things that no longer serve us. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the season is linked to the metal element which is characterized by the color white, the lungs, and the large intestine. To those who are sensitive to seasonal changes, autumn can also be linked to the emotions of grief and nostalgia.
As the leaves fall, create fertile ground, and leave the potential for growth for the spring, our bodies begin a similar process, in that we begin to--whether consciously or subconsciously--slow down, become a bit more introverted and begin readily focusing our energy for the long winter ahead. Whether we are baking, cooking, organizing homes, calendars, tending to goals, and focusing on our families and ourselves, we slowly become more introspective, resourceful, and forward-thinking.
Life seems to have a lot of moving parts as the year draws to a close-- and sometimes you need a hand to help you and your family make healthy choices....Everybody Healing Center's Guide to Fall Wellness has you covered.
Eat Seasonally!
Eating seasonally during the fall months will help support your lungs and immune system. Each seasonal shift brings about different foods that will best support our bodies at that time. In Autumn, when our bodies become increasingly dry and cold, it is important that we eat warming foods, and try to scale back on the cold and raw delights of summer.
Now that the season is shifting, we need to shift to more soups and stews.
These are nutritious and easier for our bodies to digest.
Eating warm, cooked vegetables of the season (sweet potatoes, squash, beets, broccoli, etc.) will help your body adjust to the change.
Pungent foods (onion, garlic, turnip, ginger, horseradish) all help to build immunity and eliminate mucus.
Stay hydrated, my friends: drink warm water and tea with your meals and throughout the day to hydrate and warm your body.
Eat locally grown foods like apples, pears, nuts, and root vegetables to support your body's natural balance.
In addition to the guidelines above, consider adding the following foods and supplements to support lung and digestive health:
Digestive Support
Magnesium glycinate or citrate
Flax seeds
Omega 3 fatty acids
Probiotics
Dried fruits
Oatmeal
Chia seeds
Lung Support/Mucus Reduction:
Mustard greens
Water chestnuts
Cauliflower
Lotus root
Almonds
Dandelion leaves
Quercitin
Yuca
Reduce dairy, sugar, and wheat consumption
Fall Back...and Move Forward!
Let go of things that no longer serve you, and be more deliberate with your thoughts, words, and actions.
Practice mindful movements: try yoga or mindful stretches to promote flexibility and grounding.
Stay Warm!
Heading outside on a cold, windy day can increase your chances of getting sick. Dress in layers, if you can...especially in the early morning and in the evening.
Avoid indoor drafts and move away from the air conditioning vent at work.
Wear a face covering! Covering your mouth and nose will provide that extra bit of defense from the cold, wind, dryness, and, in turn, decreased immunity.
Acupuncture!
As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to drop, our bodies tend to slow down considerably. Autumn is a great time to let your body rejuvenate.
Acupuncture treatments can help stimulate circulation, boost immunity, and ease aches and pains!
For effective acupuncture treatments, consistency is key. Regular sessions can strengthen the body’s natural healing response, especially during winter when the immune system may be vulnerable.
We are committed to helping you enjoy a happy, healthy, productive autumn!
